Know when to walk away – Know when to run

The header is a line from ‘The Gambler’ – my favorite poker song by Kenny Rogers. This line emphasizes something that is very essential in poker. Most new poker players think the good money is to be made in the hands that they win. In fact most strong hands when played won’t really matter how good a poker player you are.  What makes the difference between the amateur poker player and the professional poker player is knowing when to fold. Why is that? The reason for this is that most poker players are able to win with their strong hands – the pro might be able to subtract a bit more on average than the amateur.  The big difference is that the pro knows when to fold and not lose too many blinds on one hand – but they also have an intuitive feeling about when to call. One of my poker pals once gave me a good advice – if in doubt then fold. The reason was simple most poker players have a natural to call, they are either curious or they hate letting some other players bully them around, or maybe both. These two emotional factors have a tendency to affect your decision making towards calling. So when you think you are in doubt about folding or calling – then try to subtract your emotions from your rational decision and you are almost always ending up on the decision where you need to fold. Remember that money saved is money won – and that truth is even truer in poker than in any other disciplines around.

When to hold’em

Ok – so now I told you if you were in doubt – then fold. But there are still times when you at first might be in doubt but after analyzing the situation you rationally have to call. This is only if you have serious reasons for believing that your opponent is bluffing or value betting something that is weaker than your holding. Let’s say you are holding QQ preflop – you raise – the button calls – the blinds folds. Flop comes 346 with two diamonds. You make a continuation bet. The villain calls. 3 of clubs hits turn. You make another continuation bet.  Villain calls. River is king of hearts. Not the best card in the deck, but certainly not the worst either. You decide to check to villain. Villain instantly over shoves all in with 1½ times the pot. You get in serious doubts about what to do. So intuitively we have just learned you have to fold. This situation is different though. What beats us here? Well a lot of things do. If he holds a king we are crushed. He could have trips or full house or a straight. These hands beat us up big times.  But let’s say he had a king – would he not consider how to play it on river and not make a move instantly. How strong is a pair kings in this situation and what would he get value from – and especially from an over bet shove. Not much. He might have hit two pairs on river k6 or something. Your argument should now be, but nobody would call with that crap. Well if they played by the book they wouldn’t but a lot of players don’t care about the book, and have no idea what a good hand range is! So that hand is certainly a possibility, also a full house, trips or straight, but why would he over shove – and do it so fast? This should be your consideration here. So this decision is a call in my book – the move simply doesn’t make sense. Sometimes the villain will turn up with a monster the rest of the times he will show up a bluff and on this board he very often will have a broken flush or straight draw that he decided to turn into a bluff on river.

When freerollers start a fight

Whenever you start winning a couple of dollars from our poker freerolls then you need to think how you should make them grow. Many players tend to play cash games and if that is your battle plan as well then I offer you 5 free tips on how to become a winning player in cash games.

Tight is right

Unlike tournament play cash games are defined by a static blind structure. It simply never changes – you can naturally change table and move to different games with different blind structures. But when you are sitting at a table the blinds doesn’t change. This means you do not have to adjust your preflop hand selection. You can just sit back and wait for the strong hands and let all the other players randomly spit out money on hands that should never have seen the light of day.

In cash game poker it is extremely important to be disciplined and patient. It is no excuse that the other players at the table are playing 99% of their hands. Stick to a conservative hand range. This will bring you good profit.

Select you opponents before they eat you

A crucial element of all poker is table selection. Be sure to have some bad players at your table otherwise chances are you are the target at the table if you can’t spot the fish. Instead point out a couple of fish and target them instead of risking getting targeted yourself.

Aggression is a virtue in the game of poker

It is extremely important to bet instead of calling in poker. The reason for this is it a blinds man’s game just being a calling station, and a general rule of thumb is that you need a way stronger hand to call with than to bet with. Plus betting lets you often take down the pot without a fight. And that is good cause you seldom het the board that hard, that you want to fight back. Take the initiative yourself – don’t let your opponents push you around.

Take all the time in the world

… Or at least all the time there is before the time bank shots down and auto folds your hand. If you have a tough decision then it is probably an indication for analyzing is in order. Use the Time bank – that is why it is there.

Fear the strong – exploit the weak

You seldom sit at a table of all bad players. So it is important that you find the right targets and pretty much stay out of the way from the good players. Your primary money is going to be made from the fish, so keep making him uncomfortable – rerais him and keep picking at him through his game. Poker is not a game of heroes but a game of understanding your opponents and the equity to be made from them.

Freeroll Strategy

What is the difference between a normal poker tournament and a freeroll poker tournament? You probably already know that – the normal poker tournament has some kind of buy in fee to join where as the freeroll is for free. So why make this distinction? Why is this important? Well if you look at the freerolls from a slightly different perspective you will see that unlike the normal tournaments they do not have an element of risk. They only have the opportunity of winning!

This have consequences for the optimal strategy when playing poker freerolls and that is why we keep telling that it is extremely important to have developed a freeroll strategy that differs from normal poker tournament strategy.

Freeroll Strategy Part 1

If you don’t know anything about poker tournament strategies I recommend you take a look at our poker school, there we both have a great series on SNG’s and one on Multi-Table Tournaments. But if you already know a bit about tournament strategy you probably already know that playing tight aggressive is a good approach in poker tournaments. Here I am going to point at another alternative approach that should only be used in poker freerolls. We recommend that instead of playing tight aggressive you start out by playing some kind of mix between loose passive and loose aggressive. There is one goal and that is to at least triple within the first our. Take your chances don’t fold your draws, try to build huge pots with potential monsters – only let go of total rubbish postflop. In most of the freerolls you will be using this freeroll strategy – you will bust quite early – don’t worry about that – just pick a new one from our freeroll list – we typically monitor around 20 freerolls starting within the hour. In a few of the freerolls you will be playing you will be deep from very early on and that is the goal. Now we are ready for part 2.

Freeroll Strategy Part 2

Ok now you have busted in several freerolls but in one of them you actually tripled up whithin the first hour. So that went well – so why not just continue the maniac style? The reason is this now you are stack wise one of the favorites to making it to the money and possibel to one of the nicer placements. So now it is time to return to a very conservative playing style. Don’t take the same kind of risks any more. Play tight aggressive. And there is one bonus feature and that is you have a perfect table image to play nittysh and super tight because your opponents have seen you do all these crazy stuff. So when you suddenly goes mad again and go all in they will not put much respect into your moves. This naturally means you shouldn’t even consider bluffing your opponents because they will be very tempted to call you down extremly light – so go for value!

Hoped this article helped you improve your freeroll strategy!
