What is the difference between a normal poker tournament and a freeroll poker tournament? You probably already know that – the normal poker tournament has some kind of buy in fee to join where as the freeroll is for free. So why make this distinction? Why is this important? Well if you look at the freerolls from a slightly different perspective you will see that unlike the normal tournaments they do not have an element of risk. They only have the opportunity of winning!
This have consequences for the optimal strategy when playing poker freerolls and that is why we keep telling that it is extremely important to have developed a freeroll strategy that differs from normal poker tournament strategy.
Freeroll Strategy Part 1
If you don’t know anything about poker tournament strategies I recommend you take a look at our poker school, there we both have a great series on SNG’s and one on Multi-Table Tournaments. But if you already know a bit about tournament strategy you probably already know that playing tight aggressive is a good approach in poker tournaments. Here I am going to point at another alternative approach that should only be used in poker freerolls. We recommend that instead of playing tight aggressive you start out by playing some kind of mix between loose passive and loose aggressive. There is one goal and that is to at least triple within the first our. Take your chances don’t fold your draws, try to build huge pots with potential monsters – only let go of total rubbish postflop. In most of the freerolls you will be using this freeroll strategy – you will bust quite early – don’t worry about that – just pick a new one from our freeroll list – we typically monitor around 20 freerolls starting within the hour. In a few of the freerolls you will be playing you will be deep from very early on and that is the goal. Now we are ready for part 2.
Freeroll Strategy Part 2
Ok now you have busted in several freerolls but in one of them you actually tripled up whithin the first hour. So that went well – so why not just continue the maniac style? The reason is this now you are stack wise one of the favorites to making it to the money and possibel to one of the nicer placements. So now it is time to return to a very conservative playing style. Don’t take the same kind of risks any more. Play tight aggressive. And there is one bonus feature and that is you have a perfect table image to play nittysh and super tight because your opponents have seen you do all these crazy stuff. So when you suddenly goes mad again and go all in they will not put much respect into your moves. This naturally means you shouldn’t even consider bluffing your opponents because they will be very tempted to call you down extremly light – so go for value!
Hoped this article helped you improve your freeroll strategy!
